This image illustrates the strategy students can use to clarify what they are reading. In the text example, Mrs. Clark explains that back-tracking through the woods is similar to rereading material in a story; looking for familiar landmarks is similar to readers activating prior knowledge; and calling for help is similar to referring to outside resources such as a dictionary.
